This Sunday This week's gospel starts with disciples obsessing over who’s number one, which leads Jesus to say something about God's take on importance and power. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in God’s community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture, where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray “your kingdom come” we are praying for an end to tyranny and oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame transformed to be the sign of great honor and service. Readings: Isaiah 53:4-12, Psalm 91:9-16, Hebrews 5:1-10, Mark 10:35-45  November 1st we will celebrate 150 years, All Saints' Day and Dia De Los Muertos.  Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a festival to welcome the souls of the dead.  The living prepare an offerenda (offering) for the dead including favorite foods, candles, religious artifacts, and other remembrances.  We welcome you to bring remembrances of loved ones who have passed to add to our offerenda.   During the anniversary celebration we will remember those who founded and sustained the church over the past 150 years, as well as celebrate the diversity and culture that makes First Trinity an exciting and vibrant congregation today. With the anniversary celebration fast approaching it is time to make sure that we have help! Please email rene@firsttrinitychicago.com, speak to Rene about if/when you can help. This is all-hands-on-deck time. Thursday, October 29, 5-7- Set up auditorium Friday, October 30, 4-7 - Decorate auditorium and Kitchen Saturday, October 31, 10-1 - Decorate sanctuary Sunday, November 1: 9 am - Set up breakfast/kitchen 10 am - help with facepainting/crafts Noon - play an instrument or take a role in the Dia De Los Muertos procession. After worship - Help at reception. After reception - Help with clean up! We appreciate all the help we can get.  Thank you! Leading up to Reformation Day, and our 150th Anniversary, join us for the month of October as we read from works by Martin Luther. "Martin Luther's Greatest Hits." Tuesdays 7-8:30 in October. You know you'll love it.

E-News for All Saint's Sunday!

Day of the Dead focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. All Saints celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who are the body of Christ.

Join us as we celebrate both on November 2. Bring photos or remembrances of those who have left us. Bring instruments to play as we process through the neighborhood. 

9:00 am - Face painting, coffee and hot chocolate.

10:00 am - Gather in the sanctuary.

10:30 am - March through the neighborhood.

11:00 am (approximate) - Gather in the sanctuary for worship

12:00 (approximate) - Fellowship

We will be also installing new members on Sunday!  

Color of the day is White and Gold.

In preparation for the upcoming voter's meeting on November 16, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the First Trinity Constitution and Bylaws.

On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ—the good news—that makes us free! Though we give thanks for the events of the sixteenth-century Reformation that brought renewal to the church of that time, we pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of baptism we are made one body; we pray for the day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord's table.  And we celebrate Reformation Sunday!  Color of the day is Red!

Readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34, Psalm 46, Romans 3:19-28, John 8:31-36

First Trinity E-News

In this week's first reading God uses the Gentile ruler Cyrus to accomplish divine purposes. When the Pharisees try to trap Jesus, he tells them to give the emperor what belongs to him and to God what belongs to God. To gather for worship reminds us that our ultimate allegiance is to God rather than to any earthly authority. Created in the image of God, we offer our entire selves in the service of God and for the sake of the world.

Readings: Isaiah 45:1-7, Psalm 96:1-9 [10-13], 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10,Matthew 22:15-22

This party is geared toward kids, but adults are welcome and will have plenty of fun and silliness too! Use it as a starting place, pit stop, or ending place while trick or treating, or just spend the whole night hanging out with us!

Anyone interested in contributing toward the party: we could use bags of individually wrapped candy to pass out to trick or treaters. Thanks!

All Saints Sunday & Commemoration of the Dead 11/4

Sunday, November 4, All Saints Sunday, First Trinity will have a special worship service remembering all the saints (loved ones and relatives) who have gone on before us.

As soon as you'd like, please start bringing in photographs and other memorabilia of loved ones who have died, and that you'd like to remember on All Saints Sunday. 

We will arrange them around the altar and have a special ceremony to remember them at First Trinity during 10:30 morning worship.
