This Week
Join us July Sunday, for community-lead worship and special guest preacher, Rev. Lydia Hernández. About the Rev.: Rev. Lydia Hernández-Marcial is a Puerto Rican ordained minister from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She has studied in Lutheran schools, hung with the Presbyterians (and was one at one time). She spent time as a leader in a college ecumenical ministry in the University of Puerto Rico. As a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) she served as a pastor in several churches in Puerto Rico from 1999 to 2011. During that time, she was professor of Old Testament, Christian Ethics, and Christian Theology at the Disciples of Christ Bible Institute. Rev. Lydia Hernández-Marcial also gave workshops on discovering and using one’s spiritual gifts as part of the Natural Church Development program in Puerto Rico. Rev. Hernández-Marcial has a bachelor degree with a major in biology from the University of Puerto Rico (1988), M Div from the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico (2000), STM from Union Theological Seminary in the city of New York (2012), and a ThM from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (2015). She hopes to earn a PhD in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament in May, 2018 from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. In Chicago, she has worked as a Spanish, Hebrew, and Greek tutor. For the past two summers, she has also taught liturgical Spanish at the Lutheran Seminary Program of the Southwest, Austin, Texas. In other words, she is awesome, and you should come welcome her, First Trinity style!
To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind is to reflect God’s mercy in responding to one’s neighbor. That mercy found its most profound expression in the “gospel that has come to you”—namely the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That gospel mercy comes to us again today: at the font, at the altar, and from the pulpit. It is very near to you.
Readings: Deuteronomy 30:9-14, Psalm 25:1-10, Colossians 1:1-14, Luke 10:25-37
