E-News

This Sunday

Jesus says that the bread he gives for the life of the world is his flesh, and whoever eats this bread has eternal life now and will be raised on the last day. In Ephesians Paul tells us what this life Jesus gives us looks like, this life we live as those marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit in baptism. We live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us. The whole purpose of life is giving yourself for the other.

Readings: 1 Kings 19:4-8, Psalm 34:1-8, Ephesians 4:25--5:2, John 6:35, 41-51

This Sunday

Jesus does great deeds of power and gives his disciples authority over demons. Yet none of this power is unilateral; it all must be received by faith. Jesus asks his disciples to go out without money or supplies, so that they will be dependent on how others receive them. When we are sent from the assembly to witness and to heal, we are asked to be vulnerable, to be dependent on the reception of others. The Spirit always operates in the between: between Jesus and his Abba, between Jesus and us, between you and me, between us and those to whom we are sent.

Readings: Ezekiel 2:1-5, Psalm 123, 2 Corinthians 12:2-10, Mark 6:1-13

We are also pleased to welcome our new intern, Toby Chow! Please plan to stick around after church to get to know Toby... and let him get to know us!

What a Week!

Alicia, Elma, Erica, Giovanni, Isaiah, Rene, Roxy, and Yami had a great time at the SLCM community meal on Sunday night.

Tuesday we were visited by Claudio Carvalhaes' from McCormic Theological Seminary and his class, ‪Preaching‬ from the ‪Margins‬ of the World.  The pastors joined us for conversation, a tour of the neighborhood and a community meal during God's Closet.  They have also made a very generous donation to the community meal ministry.  It was really wonderful to meet them! Lots of photos here!

We're most of the way there!  If you've been meaning to donate to the building fund but have not yet done it, here's the link!  Let's make sure that our worship space continues to be a sanctuary and home!  Details hereDonate here.

God's Closet is the free, volunteer run clothing pantry at First Lutheran Church of the Trinity. Recently we were blessed with a large donation from a thrift store that went out of business. Between those donations, our regular "spring cleaning" donations and the generosity of our neighbors, we are overfull again. When this happens, we open for an extra day or so to clean out.
As always, God's Closet is intended for anyone with a need. Those who need clothing, teachers, crafters, and artists in need of craft supplies, whoever.

The First Trinity Kids' group will also be selling lemonade, crafts, baked goods and raffle tickets to help fund their upcoming trip to Lutherdale Bible Camp.
God's Closet Mission Statement:
Heeding the biblical commands to care for the poor, to clothe the naked, and to love one's neighbor as one's self, and recognizing the call of faith to be responsible stewards and caretakers of an increasingly fragile planet, God's Closet at First Trinity strives to provide an alternative source for clothing and other goods in the Bridgeport community. The intent of God's Closet is to provide both resources for those in need in a life-giving way, and a "green" venue for the redistribution and re-purposing of clothing and other goods.
We are currently open to the public on the following days and times:
• Tuesdays, 5 to 7 pm
• Fridays, 10 am to Noon
• Sunday Mornings after 10:30 Worship

This Sunday is our annual Oktoberfest... and it is going to be fun!  Starting with outdoor worship at 10:30, and the Oktoberfest celebration starts at 1.  Join us for great food including Brats, Tom Fashing's Famous Kraut and more (something for the vegans too!)  We'll play Nagelspielen, dance the Chicken Dance, and kids will make Pretzel Necklaces.  We have raffles including neat prizes from the Cubs, Bears and White Sox!

Oktoberfest is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we feel blessed that so many of our friends join us.  The money we raise will help us in our plans to expand God's Closet and start a new Sunday School program in the next year.

Bible Study is going great - Tuesday at 7:00 pm. Potluck dinner! A study! On the Beatitudes! From Matthew and Luke! Next week - Blessed are the meek, led by Katie Jacob!
Click here for some suggested reading for those who attended this week or anyone who is interested in Blessed are those who Mourn.

Our friends at South Loop Campus Ministry have their monthly Community Meal this Sunday.  All Are Welcome.

Jesus' parable about two sons who don't do what they say reveals surprises in the reign of God, such as prostitutes and tax collectors going before others into God's kingdom. In the reading from Ezekiel the people question whether the ways of the Lord are unfair; instead they are to repent and turn to the Lord. Paul urges us to look to Christ as a model of humility, looking to the interests of others above our own. Nourished by the broken bread and shared cup, we offer our lives for the sake of our needy world.

Readings: Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32, Psalm 25:1-9, Philippians 2:1-13, Matthew 21:23-32

Sharing a Meal

When God's Closet is open on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings, we often share a meal with those who come to shop in the clothing pantry.  This is a potluck style meal, consisting of food that was donated to the church and prepared by volunteers.  It's always a nice time!

Today we shared chopped salad, chili and hot dogs, with a nice watermelon for dessert!  Anyone is welcome to come and eat or participate as a volunteer.

God's Closet is open Tuesdays 5-7 and Fridays 10-noon.  Contact gcloset@firsttrinitychicago.com for info.
