God's Closet is the free, volunteer run clothing pantry at First Lutheran Church of the Trinity. Recently we were blessed with a large donation from a thrift store that went out of business. Between those donations, our regular "spring cleaning" donations and the generosity of our neighbors, we are overfull again. When this happens, we open for an extra day or so to clean out.
As always, God's Closet is intended for anyone with a need. Those who need clothing, teachers, crafters, and artists in need of craft supplies, whoever.
The First Trinity Kids' group will also be selling lemonade, crafts, baked goods and raffle tickets to help fund their upcoming trip to Lutherdale Bible Camp.

God's Closet Mission Statement:
Heeding the biblical commands to care for the poor, to clothe the naked, and to love one's neighbor as one's self, and recognizing the call of faith to be responsible stewards and caretakers of an increasingly fragile planet, God's Closet at First Trinity strives to provide an alternative source for clothing and other goods in the Bridgeport community. The intent of God's Closet is to provide both resources for those in need in a life-giving way, and a "green" venue for the redistribution and re-purposing of clothing and other goods.

This Sunday is our annual Oktoberfest... and it is going to be fun! Starting with outdoor worship at 10:30, and the Oktoberfest celebration starts at 1. Join us for great food including Brats, Tom Fashing's Famous Kraut and more (something for the vegans too!) We'll play Nagelspielen, dance the Chicken Dance, and kids will make Pretzel Necklaces. We have raffles including neat prizes from the Cubs, Bears and White Sox!
Oktoberfest is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we feel blessed that so many of our friends join us. The money we raise will help us in our plans to expand God's Closet and start a new Sunday School program in the next year.

Our friends at South Loop Campus Ministry have their monthly Community Meal this Sunday. All Are Welcome.
Jesus' parable about two sons who don't do what they say reveals surprises in the reign of God, such as prostitutes and tax collectors going before others into God's kingdom. In the reading from Ezekiel the people question whether the ways of the Lord are unfair; instead they are to repent and turn to the Lord. Paul urges us to look to Christ as a model of humility, looking to the interests of others above our own. Nourished by the broken bread and shared cup, we offer our lives for the sake of our needy world.
Readings: Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32, Psalm 25:1-9, Philippians 2:1-13, Matthew 21:23-32

Sharing a Meal
When God's Closet is open on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings, we often share a meal with those who come to shop in the clothing pantry. This is a potluck style meal, consisting of food that was donated to the church and prepared by volunteers. It's always a nice time!

Today we shared chopped salad, chili and hot dogs, with a nice watermelon for dessert! Anyone is welcome to come and eat or participate as a volunteer.
God's Closet is open Tuesdays 5-7 and Fridays 10-noon. Contact gcloset@firsttrinitychicago.com for info.
